A Look at High-Voltage Electrical Transmission Systems

After production at generating stations, electrical energy is transmitted for utilization by consumers. This is because generating stations are typically situated away from where consumers reside. The transmission system is the network that delivers energy from the production locations to the end users.

Electrical transmission is usually done over long distances through the distribution grid. To transport power from generation stations to consumers in town and urban centers, overhead transmission lines are used. Typically, transmission cables are carried by lattice steel towers and steel or wooden poles.

The generated energy can either be transmitted in alternating current (AC) or high voltage direct current (HVDC) form. Although for many decades power transmission was via AC, HVDC is now becoming more common.
